Dreamland

The purpose of the Dreamland project was to create a fantasy land for a children's show. Our projects were to be inspired by children's stories, and imagine a show in which a child is read a bedtime story, and transported to a fantasy world upon going to sleep. We were to design the child's bedroom, their dream land, and figure out what the transition from reality to fantasy would be. This project focused on our creativity in visuals and storyboarding. We were to make three visuals of the dream land, and at least one visual of the child's bedroom, and a storyboard for the transition between the two.

I had a ton of fun with this project. I'm historically an illustrator, so I was very excited to dip into a project focused on visuals and fantasy. For the bedtime story, I chose The Paperbag Princess, a book a headstrong girl tricking a dragon, and making her own path that I loved when I was a kid. I drew inspiration from 80's fantasy incorporating wizards and dragons into the fantasy world, and I added in a few eccentricites to my central character. I wanted my child to feel like a real kid, complete with weird and mismatched interests. I based the real world location in Oakland, California where I'm from. I wanted to use a place that I was familiar with, and felt that the environment suited the story.
